It is located at Karipur in the Malappuram district of the South Malabar region. It serves the Malabar region, consisting of Malappuram, Wayanad, and Palakkad. The airport serves as an operating base for Air India Express and operates Hajj Pilgrimage services to Medina and Jeddah from Kerala. It is tied with Hyderabad in terms of international traffic. It received international airport status on 2 February 2006. It is one of a few airports in the country with a tabletop runway.

This add-on features a detailed rendition of Campo Grande International Airport (SBCG) in Brazil, including realistic buildings with PBR texturing, comprehensive ground modeling, and accurately placed parking spots and taxiways. It also includes a partial internal terminal model and enhanced lighting for taxiways and runway approaches. There are a number of flying schools and general aviation businesses operating from the GA area adjacent to the main terminal.

Take your favourite sight seeing aircraft or helicopter and check out some of the many attractions such as Parliament House, the National Museum on the lake shore, the War Memorial, and the defence precinct including the Australian Defence Force Academy which overlooks the airport from Mount Pleasant.

The Cap Juby airfield was one of the stopovers for Compagnie Latécoère aircraft flying from Casablanca to Dakar. In 1925, Francisco Cervera built two hangars near the Spanish fort for the needs of the Company.
