The airport is named after the Transylvanian patriot Avram Iancu (1824-1872) protagonist of the Transylvanian Revolution. The airport was modernised in the 1960s: the new passenger terminal was opened in 1969 and new flight safety equipment was installed in 1970. Since 1996, goods have been handled and in August 1997 the Provincial Council became manager of the airport, immediately starting work on the expansion of the terminal and re-establishing the Budapest-Cluj Napoca flight making it international again. Since becoming an international airport in 1996, passenger traffic has been steadily increasing. The opening of a new Nokia factory in Jucu, as well as a large growth in traffic, led the provincial council to invest again for the expansion of the airport. Mt. Everest Airports Vol.2
Phaplu is the closest airport to Mount Everest that is connected to the national road network. Due to rising tourist numbers there are more and more scheduled flights to this airport which is not only another Gateway to Everest but in itself a beautiful destination nested into a lush green landscape.
The airport has an interesting location along a slope with an apron carved into the terrain and the tower and terminal on top of a high wall that follows the runway. Be cautious when taxiing her... The airport has an interesting location along a slope with an apron carved into the terrain and the tower and terminal on top of a high wall that follows the runway. Be cautious when taxiing here as you wouldn‘t be the first pilot there who‘s wingtip would touch the wall! Approaches to the airport however are troubled by the harsh wind conditions in the valley. Due to strong wind the airport closes at noon, which means that flights are only happening in the morning hours when the weather is usually suitable for flying. Gusts of 43 knots have been recorded here.
As a bonus there’s another challenging airport included in this package: Kangel Danda, which is spectacularly located on top of a mountain between Rumjatar and Lukla. At both ends of the runway there are steep cliffs letting you gain ground clearance quickly without even climbing.
Recently there have been plans to re-commence scheduled flights here since the coms equipment got destroyed by a thunderstorm and little efforts have been made to repair it for years. The goats grazing the airport are happy using is as a welcome pasture.

Mozzie Mk III
The Mozzie Mk III is a single-seat, single-engine, open-cockpit ultralight helicopter. Despite its small size and light weight, it is a fully functioning conventional (tail rotor type) helicopter, capable of autorotation.
This project was developed in order to help raise donations for Scott Yaeger's (Jonx's Father's) brain surgery. EGXP - Scampton Air Base
Royal Air Force Scampton or RAF Scampton (ICAO: EGXP) is a former Royal Air Force station located adjacent to the A15 road near to the village of Scampton,Lincolnshire, and 6 miles (9. 7 km) north-west of the city of Lincoln, England. The station was closed and returned to agriculture following the First World War, and reactivated in the 1930s. It has provided an airfield for fi... Royal Air Force Scampton or RAF Scampton (ICAO: EGXP) is a former Royal Air Force station located adjacent to the A15 road near to the village of Scampton,Lincolnshire, and 6 miles (9. 7 km) north-west of the city of Lincoln, England. RAF Scampton stood on the site of a First World War Royal Flying Corps landing field, which had been called Brattleby. The station was closed and returned to agriculture following the First World War, and reactivated in the 1930s. It has provided an airfield for fighters in the First World War, bombers during the Second World War and V-force Avro Vulcans during the Cold War. The station was temporarily closed in 1996, but subsequently re-opened to provide a home for the RAF Aerobatic Team the Red Arrows, and to private companies, temporarily, such as Hawker Hunter Aviation, for the maintenance and storage of aircraft. In July 2018, the Ministry of Defence announced that Scampton would close and be sold, with all units relocated elsewhere. The station closed on 31 March 2023. The airport has commenced its expansion and renovation project, which is currently under construction. This project will increase the passenger handling capacity of the airport to 1. 2 million passengers per year and the project should complete in December 2022.
