The airport was built in 1938 for German military purposes before World War II (Schöngarten). It was operated briefly by Soviet forces following the war before being used for civilian purposes in 1945. Services were operated to Warsaw, Łódź, Poznań and Katowice. By 1992 destinations also included Krakow, Rzeszów, Gdańsk, Szczecin, and Koszalin. The first international flights were inaugurated in January 1993, serving Frankfurt, Germany. On December 6, 2005, the airport was renamed after the famous astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. Terminal extensions were officially opened on the same day, increasing the airport's capacity to 750,000 passengers per year. This capacity was quickly exceeded by several hundred thousand (in the first 9 months of 2007 the airport served 972,505 passengers) so the existing terminal space was expanded by 1,900 m² to alleviate some of the congestion, but more importantly make the terminal facilities conform to the requirements of the Schengen Agreement, which was implemented at Poland's airports on 31 March 2008. "Business Traveler Poland" recognized Wrocław's airport as the best Polish regional airport in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. In 2017, the Sleepingairports. net portal recognized Wrocław's airport as the best in Poland and eleventh in Europe. In May 2014, the HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) base was launched at the airport. In 2015, Ryanair announced that it had selected Copernicus Airport Wrocław for its aircraft maintenance base. The construction of the hangar to fit 2 C-type aircraft (Boeing 737) was finished in 2017. The airport upgraded to the ILS system from Category I to Category II in April 2016. In October 2022, Ryanair began the expansion of WAMS (Wrocław Aircraft Maintenance Services) with another hangar and two spaces for C-type aircraft (Boeing 737). The Airport also announced a number of projects including new taxiways, additional apron space, and deicing designated space. Due to the existence of NATO garrisons nearby, in which US troops have been stationed as part of the Atlantic Resolve operation since January 2017, Wroclaw airport is very often used by US Air Force transport aircraft.

The Lim-6 (NATO reporting name Fresco) was a Polish attack aircraft used between 1961 and 1992 by the Polish Air Force. It was a variant of the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17. There is a small cargo terminal located next to the passenger terminal T1. As 2022 LOT Polish Airlines was the only regular carrier flying to and from Zielona Góra.

Due to these restrictions, pilots approaching from the north are generally required to follow the path of the Potomac River and turn just before landing. This approach is known as the River Visual. Similarly, flights taking off to the north are required to climb quickly and turn left. The "River Visual" is only possible with a ceiling of at least 3,500 feet (1,100 m) and visibility of 3 statute miles (4. 8 km) or more. There are lights on the Key Bridge, Theodore Roosevelt Bridge, Arlington Memorial Bridge and the George Mason Memorial Bridge to aid pilots following the river.

The now-defunct Midway Airlines that once serviced the airport took its name from the airport, not vice versa. The airfield is located in a square mile bounded by 55th and 63rd Streets, and Central and Cicero Avenues. The current terminal complex was completed in 2001. The terminal bridges Cicero Avenue and contains 43 gates with facilities for international passengers. The Stevenson Expressway (I-55) runs adjacent to the airport, heading northeast to Downtown Chicago and southwest to various suburbs. The CTA rapid transit Orange Line provides transit to Downtown Chicago where it connects with other subway/elevated rapid transit lines. Chicago Midway International Airport covers just over one square mile (650 acres or 260 hectares) and has five runways. Midway is surrounded by buildings and other development, so the landing thresholds of the runways are displaced to provide obstacle clearance. The FAA and the airlines ensure safety by adhering to calculated load limits and various weather minimums. Because of the displaced landing thresholds, the runways have shorter distances available for landings than for takeoffs. 13C/31C, the longest runway, only has an available landing distance of 6,059 feet (1,847 m) in the southeast direction, and 5,826 feet (1,776 m) to the northwest. The largest aircraft normally seen at Midway is the Boeing 757. Normally, commercial planes only take off from and land on runways 4R/22L and 13C/31C. The other runways are used by smaller aircraft and, per the US FAA Chart Supplement are restricted from use by large commercial aircraft except in emergency.

Runway 16L-34R is 3,004 feet (916 m) in length, and suitable only for small aircraft. The Paine (PAE) VOR/DME is unusually mounted on top of a Boeing hangar. The airport has 456 general aviation hangars. The airport was built in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration and began commercial service in 1939. It was named for an American airmail and Army Air Corps pilot, Topliff Olin Paine in 1941, shortly before the Army Air Corps began the occupation of Paine Field for military use. During his air mail career, Paine became nationally recognized for his accomplishments while flying through rugged terrain and snowstorms in the Rocky Mountains. From 1920 to 1922, Paine flew primarily out of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Salt Lake City, Utah, for the Air Mail Service, becoming one of the top fliers in the Western Division. The airport briefly returned to civilian use in the late 1940s, before conversion into an air force base during the Korean War. In 1966, the Boeing Company selected Paine Field for the site of its Everett assembly plant as part of the Boeing 747 program. The Boeing Everett Factory includes the largest building in the world by volume at 13,385,378 m3 (472,370,319 cu ft) and covers 98. 7 acres (39. 9 ha). Boeing began offering factory tours with the first rollout of the 747 in 1968. As of 2020 over 150,000 people come each year to visit the factory, which employs over 30,000 people. Across the airport to the west is The Boeing Store, a theater, and the Future of Flight Aviation Center, which runs the factory tour. To accommodate the Dreamlifter, a converted 747-400 which delivered 787 sections to the plant, a base was constructed on the western edge of Paine Field's runway and opened in 2013. By the 1970s, the airport had grown into a hub for light aviation and manufacturing, lacking commercial service. The county government sought to begin commercial service at Paine Field as early as the 1980s but was halted by opposition from neighboring cities. In March 2019, Paine Field resumed commercial service at a newly constructed terminal. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2023–2027 categorized it as a non-hub primary commercial service facility. The terminal was named the best regional airport in the world by Monocle magazine and one of the best small airports in the United States by USA Today. Paine Field is also home to Aviation Technical Services (ATS), one of the nation's largest aviation maintenance facilities. Paine Field is home to four flight schools making it a popular destination for flight training. There are also a number of flying clubs on the field.

Burnett acquired the land intending to use it for coal storage and shipment. Amy Louise Burnett Bond, Charles Burnett's daughter, whose mother died young, was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Howard Cranston Potter as the foster sister and godmother of Bertha Potter (Mrs. William Boeing). The Burnett family operated the land as a hay farm. In 1936 Amy Burnett Bond transferred the property back to the state government. It was still mostly semi swamp economically marginal and would cost millions to improve. The property was then transferred by the State of Washington to the federal government at the start of World War II. The Navy Department established an aircraft factory there for the production of the Boeing PBB Sea Ranger flying boat. This order was canceled, however, to free the factory for the production of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress, the factory being transferred to the Army in exchange for use of the North American Aviation Kansas City factory for the production of land based North American B-25 Mitchells for the US Marine Corps as PBJ-1s. In the Boeing Renton Factory, the following aircraft were built: B-29 (>1000), C-97 (~1000), Boeing 707/KC-135 (>1000), Boeing 727 (almost 2000), Boeing 737 (11000 and growing), Boeing 747 (3 refurbished) and Boeing 757 (>1000). Renton Municipal Airport covers an area of 170 acres (69 ha) at an elevation of 32 feet (9. 8 m) above mean sea level. It has one runway designated 16/34 with asphalt and concrete surface measuring 5,382 by 200 feet (1,640 m × 61 m). In 2016, the airport had 122,908 aircraft operations, an average of 337 per day: 98% general aviation, 1% air taxi, <1% scheduled commercial, and <1% military.
